Everyone now has a parallel pen. With this, create a true blackletter typeface. This typeface is not to be modified on another typeface, make it your own. Develop a concept, be consistent, and letter the forms on paper before digitizing them on Glyphs.

This typeface is lovingly named 308 Blackletter. Room 308 is where a vast majority of our classes as graphic design students are set. In fact, I'm unsure if any design classes are taught outside of those walls. Glyphs is an expensive software — so, graciously, CMU provides us with the licensing, but only on the 26 desktops in 308. This means that throughout the development of this typeface I spent a lot of time in 308. So, so much time.

How long could a typeface take to make? This one took a whole semester. It started on paper — as you can see to the left, there was much trial and error.

Designing this typeface was a wonderful challenge. Below is my original concept and, as you can see, it changed dramamtically. From the beginning I knew I wanted it to feel like something I created, not copied. The new, more ornamental, style pairs nicely with myself — I've consistently kept my identity as an artist, even while expanding myself towards being a designer as well. The final typeface is the marriage of those ideas.
